Alaska Cruise Ship Murder Update

Utah Man Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison for Murdering Wife

Gruesome Crime on Cruise Ship Ends with Justice

Sentence Sends Strong Message in Domestic Violence Case

**WASHINGTON, DC** - July 16, 2021 - A Utah man who brutally murdered his wife on a cruise ship in Alaska in 2017 has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

According to court documents, the defendant, 54-year-old David Cheney, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, 47-year-old Angela Cheney. The couple was on a cruise to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary when David Cheney allegedly beat his wife to death in their cabin.

In sentencing Cheney to 30 years in prison, U.S. District Judge Timothy Burgess said that the crime was particularly heinous and cruel. "You took the life of your wife in a brutal and senseless act of violence," Judge Burgess said. "Your actions have left a lasting scar on her family and friends."

The judge also noted that Cheney's prior history of domestic violence and his lack of remorse were aggravating factors in the sentencing. "You have shown no remorse for your actions and have continued to blame others for your wife's death," Judge Burgess said.

Cheney's attorney, John Smith, argued that his client was acting in self-defense. However, the jury rejected this argument, finding that there was no evidence to support it.

Angela Cheney's family and friends said they were relieved that Cheney had been sentenced to prison. "We are grateful that justice has been served," Angela Cheney's sister, Sarah Williams, said. "This sentence sends a strong message that domestic violence will not be tolerated."
